Tutankhamun became pharaoh after the death of his father Akhenaten. Akhenaten was a very controversial ruler. He outlawed all the gods except one named Aton. People were very dissatisfied with this change and, after Akhenaten's death, they destroyed many of his statues and monuments.
Today, King Tutankhamun is one of Ancient Egypt's most famous pharaohs, not least thanks to Howard Carter's determination and persistence. Tutankhamun or “King Tut” is probably the best-known Egyptian pharaoh. One of the reasons is that his burial tomb is one of the few that was discovered with everything still in it.
